Highmark Health Promotes Exec to President, CEO

Highmark Health, which is comprised of Highmark Inc. and the Allegheny Health Network, has appointed David L. Holmberg as president and CEO. He will succeed William Winkenwerder, M.D., who has held the position since 2012 and is leaving the company.

Holmberg has been a member of the senior executive team at Highmark Health since he joined the business in 2007 and has held increasingly significant operational roles. He most recently served as president of Highmark Inc.’s Diversified Businesses, which include vision, dental and stop-loss insurance companies, since July 2013. Prior to joining Highmark, Holmberg was CEO of HVHC Inc., and chairman and CEO of Visionworks.

“This is a time of significant change across the health care marketplace, and David will be the right leader at the right time to accelerate the transformation of our organization,” said Robert Baum, Ph.D., chairman of Highmark Health’s board of directors, in a statement. “I anticipate that he will work in collaboration with our executive team to continue the implementation of our growth strategy and to diversify our organization regionally and nationally with a comprehensive portfolio of health solutions.”
