U.S. Insurers Continue Donations to Japan Relief Effort

New York Life today added $100,000 to several large donations made by insurance carriers over the past week.

New York Life (New York) announced this morning that it will donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross, adding to substantial donations to the relief effort in Japan following the March 11 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Other insurers who have made large contributions include Prudential Financial (Newark, N.J.), Northwestern Mutual (Milwaukee), The Hartford, MassMutual (Boston) and Philadelphia Insurance Companies (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.).

"On behalf of the entire New York Life family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan," comments Ted Mathas, chairman and CEO of New York Life. The families caught in the disaster area and the rescue workers who are working valiantly to save lives have been in our thoughts and prayers since we learned of this tragic event. Accordingly, the company will be making a contribution to help alleviate some of the suffering and to help the Japanese people begin to recover from this disaster."

Last week Prudential announced that its foundation would contribute $6.1 million toward relief efforts in Japan.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan as they struggle to cope with the aftermath of last week's devastating earthquakes and tsunami. We hope this donation will help to ease the suffering and assist in the rebuilding effort," said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld.

Northwestern Mutual has donated $125,000; and The Hartford, MassMutual and Philadelphia Insurance Companies have each donated $100,000 toward the Japan relief efforts.
