Ellis Motivates Matters
In the process of preparing for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance at Chubb Group of Insurance Companies (Warren, N.J.), Todd Ellis, SVP, CIO and home office services manager of Chubb commercial lines, says he found that one of the greatest challenges of managing is keeping his staff of 425 motivated while striving for organizational excellence. "It's important to be able to communicate that their work matters," Ellis says. "In the long term, being compliant with Sarbanes-Oxley will enhance an IT organization up and down the life cycle."
Ellis, a recreational swimmer, dove right into the challenge of team building. "Managing motivation is also about being accessible to answer questions and employees' concerns," he relates.
Since he received Elite 8 recognition in 2004, Ellis has been working to complete an architectural road map to refresh Chubb's legacy systems and prepare to implement an inventory management system. "We want to stay abreast of what's real in terms of service-oriented architecture, how we can pursue it in a cost-effective and justifiable manner, and which approaches provide strategic advantages," he says.
