Work History: Best started his career at Colonial Life and then moved to Unum Corp. as CIO. The CIO job at Provident Companies followed. A series of mergers among Colonial, Unum and Provident has brought Best full circle. "I'm not sure I ever intended to work for the same company for 30-plus years, but that's how it's worked out," he says.
Size of IT Staff: 650 developers and about 150 operations staff.
IT Budget: $200 million.
Education: BS in Mathematics from Newberry College. Executive programs at Duke and Harvard.
When He's Not Working: You can find Best on, near or under water - swimming, waterskiing, scuba diving or even beach-combing. A few of his top beaches: Barbados, Hawaii and St. Johns, but Best "loves them all."
