During it’s almost a century of experience in manufacturing and services, IBM has learned a thing or two about reducing energy consumption and manufacturing in an environmentally-sensitive manner. In the mid-1990’s, IBM worked to reduce the amount of energy consumed by its data center operations by 4.5 billion kilowatt hours, which translates into a savings of $290 million. Another goal was to reduce the number of distributed computers and move to a consolidated mainframe environment. Innovations such as Rear Door Heat eXchanger that extract 100 percent of computing heat and use less energy for cooling in data centers help financial institutions do what’s right for the environment yet reduce costs and remain complaint, explains Fred Winegust, worldwide marketing manager for Financial Services.
