Wilton Re CIO Completes Marathon for DMD Research

Andy Wood raises 10 percent of the Run for Our Sons team’s contribution of $278,000 for research into a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Andy Wood, CIO of Wilton Re and an Insurance & Technology 2009 Elite 8 honoree, completed the ING New York Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 6, as a member of the Run for Our Sons team, which raised $278,000 for research into a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Andy took on the challenge of running for a cure when he learned that a young cousin of his wife's had DMD.

The Marathon Andy chose to run proved to be a record-breaking event in several ways. More than 47,000 runners took part, $34 million was raised for Charity, and Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai's winning time of 2:05:06 in New York is now the fastest performance on a record-certified course in the United States.

"In fact, the top three men as well as the women's wheelchair champion beat course records," Andy reports. "It was my first marathon, and if it was my last then I certainly picked the best one in the world and the best weather for it."

Andy completed the course in 5 hours and 41 minutes, feeling exhausted but otherwise much better than he feared he might. He describes his run for DMD research as one of the proudest days of his life, and with reason: Andy personally raised $27,800 -- fully 10 percent of the total amount raised by the 34-member Run for Our Sons team.
