As Legal Counsel at Absolute Software, Stephen provides oversight and guidance on regulatory compliance related to data breaches and other security incidents. He counsels the Absolute Investigations team, which conducts data forensics, theft investigations, and device recoveries. He has extensive knowledge of the US regulatory landscape, including SOX, HIPAA, and other industry-specific regulatory bodies. Herecently concluded a 30-year career as a prosecutor in New York, having created and supervised one of the world's first computer crime units from 1997-2010, a unit that included a full complement of prosecutors, cybercrime investigators, computer forensic analysts, and online undercover investigators. For 10 years prior to that, he supervised numerous organized crime investigations in the New York metropolitan area. Stephen is a renowned nationwide lecturer, teacher, and writer on a variety of legal topics relating to technology such as the search and seizure of digital evidence, computer forensics performed in a legally admissible matter, and the general admissibility of computer-generated evidence. He writes a regular column for the Technology Law section of the New York Law Journal and has made similar contributions to the newsletters of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG), the High Technology CrimeInvestigation Association (HTCIA), and the New York Prosecutors Training Institute (NYPTI). For the last 10 years, he has routinely assisted in training computer forensic examiners with the FBI's Computer Analysis Response Team by playing the roles of both prosecutor and defense attorney in Moot Court Training sessions organized by the FBI.
