As a classic car restorer, Mike Mitchard, Pembroke, Bermuda-based Partner Re's ($4.2 billion in revenue) newly appointed CIO, appreciates starting with good material. At Partner Re, Mitchard has the advantage of building upon renewed core financial systems and a first-rate global underwriting platform that "should be envied by many organizations," he says. With the advantage of having those systems already in place, Mitchard says he will be able to focus on forging greater alignment between IT and the business in order to "increase efficiency by implementing the appropriate balance of control and governance without impeding progress."
In achieving Partner Re's strategic objectives, Mitchard will draw upon his 23 years of experience in IT as well as his insurance technology experience, which includes time as the head of ACE Overseas General's (Hamilton, Bermuda) data center and European systems groups and subsequent role as CIO.
At ACE, Mitchard defined the carrier's strategic IT direction to reinforce business plans, including the development and implementation of underwriting, investment and management information systems. "My experiences and the work achieved [at Partner Re] already provide a terrific springboard to focus on providing a balanced delivery of IT whilst providing strategic IT direction for the organization," he says.
