CIGNA Names Philip Emond CIO
CIGNA Corporation (Philadelphia) has named Philip Emond executive vice president and CIO of CIGNA's U.S. operations, effective Oct. 8, 2010. Emond, who is currently senior vice president of CIGNA Information Technology, will succeed Michael Woeller, who will retire next month after serving as executive vice president and CIO of CIGNA's U.S. operations since Oct. 2007.
“For the past three years, Mike has ably led CIGNA's Information Technology Division. During that time, the technology organization has evolved significantly to better meet the changing needs of today’s market, the team has been strengthened, and succession has been proactively planned – part of which included adding Phil to the team in 2008," comments David M. Cordani, president and CEO, CIGNA Corp. "From the start, Phil has demonstrated a deep understanding of technology innovation in the healthcare industry and has shown strong leadership qualities, passion for our customers and a focus on consistently delivering results.
"In naming Phil to this role, CIGNA will continue to build on the solid foundation Mike has established in partnership with Phil and the entire CIGNA technology team,” Cordani adds
Emond was appointed senior vice president of CIGNA Corporation in June of 2008, according to a CIGNA statement. In this role, he was responsible for the delivery of end-to-end technology solutions in support of CIGNA’s businesses.
Prior to joining CIGNA, over the course of his 30-year career, Emond held a variety of senior financial services leadership positions, most recently as executive vice president for Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), with responsibility for CIBC’s technology, retail and investment banking operations worldwide, according to CIGNA. Before CIBC, he served as Managing Director, Technology, Bankers Trust/Deutsche Bank, and as senior vice president and CIO, ING Canada. In a prior role, Emond also served as Director General and CIO, Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Emond holds a degree in Administration from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
“Mike came out of retirement to play a pivotal transitional role in refining and executing CIGNA's technology strategy as a global health service company," remarks Cordani. "With that path clearly set, and with the team aligned to deliver, Mike will hand over the leadership reins to Phil and will return to retirement confident in the knowledge he has served the company and our customers very well. CIGNA recognizes and appreciates Mike’s contributions and we wish him a long and happy retirement.”
