Medco, Medical Mutual of Ohio Partner on ePrescribing Initiative

The program, which includes financial incentives for medical practices, will help physicians use personal computers and wireless devices to write prescriptions and send them to the pharmacy for filling.

Medco Health Solutions (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Medical Mutual of Ohio (Cleveland) have entered into a partnership aimed at reducing prescription drug costs and improving physician practice efficiency through e-prescribing. The program, which began in March 2010 and runs through September 2010, according to a Medco press release, will help physicians use personal computers and wireless devices to write prescriptions and send them to the pharmacy for filling. The program includes financial incentives for participating physicians who adopt e-prescribing at their practices.

"ePrescribing puts life-saving information about adverse drug events in front of the doctor at the point of care," comments John P. Driscoll, president, new markets, Medco. "It's a critical component to transforming healthcare from our present system to one that is efficient, sustainable and patient-centered."

"Medical Mutual of Ohio knows that payer-physician collaboration leads to cost effective, quality care," comments Dr. Robert Rzewnicki, chief medical officer, Medical Mutual. "ePrescribing is a proven way of enhancing patient safety while reducing the administrative cost and lightening the workload in physician's offices. We're happy to help accelerate its adoption."
