MetLife Pilots Loudcloud

In order to maintain systems more efficiently and free IT workers from mundane software updating tasks, New York-based MetLife has begun a pilot of Loudcloud, Inc.'s (Sunnyvale, CA) Opsware System 3, which automates the managing and operating of servers and applications.

"If we can automate some of the routine maintenance processes, we can improve efficiency and make better use of our talented staff," says Steve Bozzo, vice president, IT. For instance, Bozzo explains, a software patch may have to be installed on more than 150 servers in the company, and each patch would have to be manually installed. "Not only will we be cutting out a lot of repetition, but we will be reducing the chance of human error," since IT can make sure that Opsware 3 will install the patch correctly on all systems.

Loudcloud, which will soon be re-branding itself as Opsware, will work closely with MetLife on the pilot. MetLife ultimately chose Loudcloud over other vendors because "Opsware was the most complete package," Bozzo says. "We are excited about moving some of our staff to more interesting and less routine work."
