Renwick Steps Up as CEO of Progressive

A year after being named chief executive officer of insurance operations at Progressive Corp. (Mayfield Village, OH),Glenn Renwick has been elevated to president and chief executive officer. He takes over the top spot from Peter Lewis, Pro-gressive's CEO for 35 years.

Having run insurance operations over the past year, Renwick says the current transition will be less of a change than moving from chief information officer to CEO of insurance operations. He sees his role as one of continuity. "I've worked with Peter Lewis for many years and we share the same vision for Progressive. Our collective execution on the vision has been in place for some time and I've had the opportunity to be involved and lead in different capacities," Renwick says. "Our goal is simply to be the best auto insurance company in the industry and to become consumers' number-one choice-this remains unchanged."

Renwick's career exemplifies the blending of business and technology better than most. He was a member of the technical staff at Bell Labs (now Lucent) and worked as a consultant for Ernst & Whitney (now Ernst & Young).

Renwick began at Progres-sive in 1986 as a product manager. He was named president of the company's mid-Atlantic division in 1988, and president of its California division in 1991. He became director of consumer marketing in 1993 and chief information officer in 1998. He was recognized as one of I&T's Elite 8 CIOs in 1999.
