Unitrin Selects Decision Manager To Improve Underwriting

Because it reportedly offered the most intuitive rules engine of the products reviewed, HNC Software (San Diego) has been awarded a contract by Unitrin Multi Lines Insurance (Dallas, the multi-line property and casualty insurance business segment of Unitrin Inc.) for its Decision Manager for Underwriting technology. Unitrin Multi Lines will use the system to analyze claims and assess underwriting risk for approximately 300,000 personal lines policyholders.

The carrier wanted a tool that could not only enable better underwriting decisions, but which also could be updated quickly by its business analysts without the help of an IT programmer, according to Jack Lubner, vice president of personal lines, Unitrin Multi Lines. "Unitrin's main objective was to have an intuitive system that business users could add rules to."

Decision Manager will enable Unitrin Multi Lines to more uniformly apply its underwriting policies to identify claims that should be reviewed by its underwriters. The engine's rules will also help sort out claims that do not need review. Addtionally, the system is flexible enough, according to Lubner, to be expanded to other areas in the underwriting operations.
