WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Following his surprising resignation this past summer as CEO of Ameritrade (Omaha), one-time CIO of USF&G(Baltimore) Tom Lewis has taken on the role of chairman and chief executive officer at Campus Pipeline (Salt Lake City), a Web platform provider for colleges and universities.
Lewis describes his new post as meeting all his criteria: "At Campus Pipeline, I have the ultimate level of creative freedom, with exceptional financial backing, and a brilliant team of people." He adds that being a technology platform provider rather than a dot-com insulates the firm from the fluctuations of the market-as does having a non-commercial client base of colleges and universities.
During the Reagan administration, Lewis was head of technology at the White House, where he was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Award. He has been a senior officer at organizations such as American Express, TenFold Corp.'s Insurance Systems Group, and Seer Technologies, which he co-founded.
Of his time as CIO at USF&G, Lewis says, "Had I not had that kind of opportunity on that scale, I don't think I would have had the skills to do what I was able to go on to accomplish at Ameritrade and at Campus Pipeline."
