Troy, N.Y.-based MapInfo released MapInfo Professional, version 8.0, which it bills as the industry's most user-friendly, comprehensive location intelligence package. The vendor touts the application's utility for catastrophe management - for example, during Hurricane Ivan, for which carriers used MapInfo Professional to locate areas with the highest concentration of claims and deploy the necessary resources with maximum efficiency.

Using the software, "Individual adjusters can be given maps with optimal routing to cover losses that are in proximity to each other," says Craig Bedell, director of insurance strategy, MapInfo. Version 8.0 includes faster editing tools, new data creation and analytical capabilities, enhanced data access, and work area enhancements. "With MapInfo Professional 8.0, the company introduces the capability of more robust analyses of multiple variables such as the number of claims, size of claims and proximity to [hurricane] path," Bedell asserts.
