When he was awarded the Elite 8 honor in 2010, Pete Atwater was CIO of group insurance for The Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America (New York). Focused on improving the customer experience, his IT organization had recently completed the rollout of an array of online tools for insureds as well as a website for employers and brokers to help simplify the enrollment process. Since then, however, Atwater has taken on a new role: CIO of Guardian's individual life business.
Along with the role change, Atwater's focus has shifted, as well. While his organization still will concentrate on the online channel in 2012, he says it now will stress operational efficiency. "Our top priorities are improving our web servicing capabilities, enabling efficiencies in our operations and underwriting areas, and supporting our product development agenda," Atwater explains. But while most budgets across the industry will be constrained, Atwater reports that, "Due to a number of technology initiatives related to our priorities," his budget actually will be slightly larger in 2012 than it was in 2011.
