John S. Bickley, International Insurance Society Founder, Passes Away at Age 90
John S. Bickley, founder of the International Insurance Society, Inc. (New York) and the Insurance Hall of Fame, has died. He was 90.
Bickley served as president and chief executive officer of the Insurance Hall of Fame from its inception until his retirement in 1988. During his tenure as executive secretary of the Griffith Foundation for Insurance Education at the Ohio State University, Dr. Bickley founded the Insurance Hall of Fame with the purpose of honoring fundamental innovation in the insurance industry.
Bickley grandfathered the concept of risk management; established the Journal of Risk and Insurance; and authored a scholarly study, "Trends and Problems in Insurance Marketing," which became an industry best seller. He was particularly known for his teaching excellence with his teaching career spanning 50 years. Bickley also taught at many higher education institutions, including The University of Alabama, The University of Wisconsin, The University of Washington, Ohio State University, Stanford University and others across the United States.
