Medical Mutual Board Names Interim Leadership Team
In the wake of the unexpected death of CEO Kent Clapp, Cleveland-based Medical Mutual of Ohio has named an interim management team. Clapp -- who held the titles of chairman, president and chief executive officer of the carrier -- passed away last Wednesday in a plane crash.
Charles A. Bryan, a retired Nationwide Insurance executive, was named the carrier's acting CEO. A Medical Mutual board member since 2001, Bryan has experience working at Ernst & Young, United Services Automobile Association (USAA) and Allstate.
Meanwhile, Samuel Miller, co-chairman of Forest City Enterprises, and David Young, a retired partner with the law firm Squire, Sanders and Dempsey, were named interim co-chairmen of the board. Retired Medical Mutual of Ohio executive James V. Patton will join Bryan, Miller and Young on a management committee.
Bryan said in a statement that the management team will work to select a new long-term leader for the company. The CEO search will begin with a review of internal candidates and then expand outside the company if necessary. "We haven't put a time limit on this process," Bryan said. "but we believe that we should be able to have new leadership in place early in 2009."
