Mutual of Omaha Made Most of Hanson’s Experience Before He Moved On

Apparently the technology accomplishments that earned Jim Hanson Elite 8 recognition in 2007 weren't enough of a challenge. Hanson, who had been with Mutual of Omaha since 1979, left his position as the carrier's EVP of information services in July. It "was time for a new challenge," he says.

Not that he hadn't achieved a lot in the past year. Before leaving Mutual of Omaha, Hanson was involved in a critical ongoing initiative: implementing a service-oriented architecture and developing services that can be assembled and reused to speed the development of business applications. "Our approach to shifting application development has been opportunistic and not a big-bang approach," he explains, adding that the resulting savings due to service reuse have been impressive to date.

In addition Mutual of Omaha moved into the banking business, which required the implementation of a core banking platform and building out IT support from scratch, Hanson reports.
